Description:

When:

Mondays, 2:45 – 4:15 p.m.; January 25th - April 27th, 2010 (12 sessions; no chess February 15th, and April 5th.)

Where:

At Heritage Christian Academy.

Who should attend:

Any student interested in learning or increasing their knowledge of chess.

Benefits:

Chess study has shown to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence.

Instructors:

Head Coach Mike Hosford will be returning to Heritage Christian Academy again this year to coach the advanced (blue level) players. Mike will have a new team of coaches to teach the intermediate (red level) players and the beginner (white level) group. All Chess4Life instructors work closely under the guidance of National Chess Master Elliott Neff. All instructors follow the coaching methods that were developed by Elliott over the past 17 years in training multiple students and teams to both state and national titles (including the 2005 and 2008 National Elementary K-5 Championship Team). Elliott has recently opened the Chess4Life Chess Center in Bellevue where students can receive additional training and where Chess4Life coaches continue to develop and hone their chess coaching skills with personal guidance from Elliott.

Material Covered:

Classes are tailored to the level of competency exhibited among the students.

Classes typically include:

Basic principles and strategy of how to open a chess game, how to conduct the middlegame, and how to win (or avoid losing) in the endgame. Many other basic to advanced level tactics are also taught, including visualization techniques and tournament practice.

Tuition:

$126 total for the 12-session winter class including chess magnet for more advanced students.
