Washington State Middle School CHAMPIONSHIP (IND)

The Washington State INDIVIDUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS are open to all players in Washington State Grade 5-9 (regardless of the school the child is in). This is an OPEN Event - there are no qualifiers required to play.

To allow the maximum number of participants to play, we have aligned this event with the Washington State ELEMENTARY Championships (same day and location) so that more players can attend. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that if your child qualifies for ELEMENTARY STATE, that they attend that tournament.

There are at LEAST 2 sections - one OPEN and one (or more) RESERVE.

OPEN - This is the "Top Section" all players may register. This section shall determine the WA Champion. A trophy will provided to the Champion and CASH AWARDS will be provided to top finishers (amounts depend on attendance). This will be a FOUR ROUND GAME 60 Event. This is a serious, competitive section. Players are required to bring their own clocks to participate. Clocks will be available on site to purchase for $25.

RESERVE Sections - These are restricted by Rating. The specific rating will be determined based on the entries received. Our current intention is to separate at Under 1000 however, we reserve the right to modify this based upon feedback from parents. This will be a FOUR ROUND G/45 event. Clocks are required to be provided by players. Since this section is intended to draw as many players as possible into Middle School Chess and keep the costs down, players may rent a clocks for $1 per player per round if either player does not have one.

Players registering for RESERVE will be notified of their section one week before the event (based on the entries received). Players registering for the RESERVE Section but do not meet restricted ratings qualifications shall be automatically moved to the OPEN section. Players registering for the OPEN section but could qualify for the RESERVE section will be contacted and an option for switching will occur BEFORE the tournament. Change of sections the day of the event will be strongly discouraged and only allowed at the discretion of the TD in extreme circumstances

There is a small "hang out area" directly adjacent to the player area. Players and parents may also stay at the Elementary Chess Event across the street. Concession are available at the Elementary Chess Event.

DO NOT WAIT TO REGISTER. Registration is limited to 150 players. Space constraints will not allow us to exceed this number.
