Description:When:Thursdays 3:35 - 4:35 p.m.; January 12th to March 26th.No chess on February 23rd. Where:Classes meet in Room 211 and the Library at John Hay Elementary SchoolWho should attend:Any student (grades K–5) interested in learning or increasing their knowledge of chess.Benefits:Chess study has shown to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence.Instructors:Chess4Life instructors work closely under the guidance of National Chess Master Elliott Neff. All instructors follow the coaching methods that were developed by Coach Elliott over the past 20 years in training multiple students and teams to both state and national titles (including most recently the 2010 National Elementary K-5 Championship Team, Stevenson Elementary from Bellevue, WA). In 2006, Coach Elliott founded the Chess4Life Chess Center in Bellevue, and expanded in 2010 to over 5,000 sq ft where students can receive additional training and where Chess4Life coaches continue to develop and hone their chess coaching skills with guidance from Elliott.Material Covered:Classes are tailored to the level of competency exhibited among the students. Classes typically include: basic principles and strategy of how to open a chess game, how to conduct the middlegame, and how to win (or avoid losing) in the endgame. Many other basic to advanced level tactics are also taught, including visualization techniques and tournament practice.
