has a strong chess background and has been working several years as one of the most successful coaches with beginner to intermediate students. Bert's high energy and animated character inspires and excites his students.

- Involved with scholastic chess since 1996
- Was captain of the Lynden chess team in high school (NW League Champions, 4th in state, 2000)
- Currently coaches Lynden High School (NW League
Champions, 5th in state, 2007)
- Loves endgames and checkmate puzzles
- Loves to play the tuba
- Loves cross-country
- Currently working on his tournament performance
