Mark Trevor Smith

has been a chess addict for over 50 years. He loves the game for its geometry, its beauty, and its lessons of persistence, creativity, and humility. In August 2009 he retired from college teaching and drove his U-Haul 2000 miles to live 2 miles from his grandson on the western shore of Lake Washington.

Chess Career Highlights:

  • Washington State Senior (50 and older) Champ 2010

  • Coach Mark's philosophy of teaching emphasizes beauty and joy and individuality and never giving up. We can't get everything "right" every time, but we can always try to learn from our mistakes and even enjoy them!

To balance the sedentary nature of chess, Mark craves long walks, bicycling, and tennis. He enjoys reading eight or nine books at a time in literature, science, and any subjects that shake common sense. His favorite writer is P.G. Wodehouse.

“Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make us happy.”
