has a strong chess background and has been working several years as one of the most successful coaches with beginner to intermediate students. Bert's high energy and animated character inspire and excite his students.

- Was captain of the Lynden chess team in high school (NW League Champions, 4th in WA state, 2000)
- Coached Lynden High School (NW League
Champions, 5th in WA state, 2007)
- Loves endgames and checkmate puzzles
- Loves to sing with the Seattle Symphony Chorale
- Loves cross-country
- Currently working on correspondence chess
